A number of blogs have been reporting that Toke Makinwa won't be taking her husband's surname. Not officially anyway. And I was wondering why that was even news worthy. So, she isn't changing her name,big deal. Do guys even realize the pain the name change thing can be. To the point you change your signature sef. Seriously though, why is this a prerequisite to marriage. I think its outdated. It shouldn't be a big deal if a woman does not take her husband's name. Let's even analyze this trend. WHY was it started and what has it achieved? Who profits from this? Why aren't guys required to change their own surnames? Would love to hear from guys? Do u still feel it's important for your wives to change their surname to yours? I am HUMAN! I have never considered myself a feminist but then again, I have never thought I wasn’t a human being either. I grew up in Nigeria, in a middle class household. I lived in a house with my parents and  4 older siblings - 2 girls and 2 boys. My mom is a doctor and my Dad, a banker. Growing up was run of the mill; We played,  cleaned,  studied and  went to bed at the same time. But there were some chores that were allocated to boys and others for the girls. For example, cooking was for the girls, while washing cars was a boys’ thing. I remember asking my mum once why the boys weren’t joining in the cooking and the answer was - "that’s just the way it is". I eventually took on some ‘boy’ chores like putting my Dad’s clothes away and changing light bulbs when my brothers left home. A new law passed in the UAE now requires women to breastfeed their kids for at least 2 years. The  law  also states that men can sue their wives if they refuse. If a woman for medical reasons is unable to breastfeed, then a wet nurse would be provided.  I can't even begin to start with this one. Its hard enough to breastfeed then to make it mandatory, even punishable if a woman decides not to. Na wa oh. Then other questions arise like; who is this wet nurse, do i have a choice or must I take the one offered, who pays this nurse, does she express and give the baby or is she required to pop her boob into my child's mouth, will she be required to live in my house for this 2 year period and who decides a woman is medically unable to breastfeed....
