7 year old and dieting??!
Dara-Lynn Weiss, a writer with Vogue magazine, wrote an article about her daughter's weight loss journey. Bea, her then 7yr old daughter had always had a big appetite and even though she wasn't exposed to junk food , would still manage to eat more than her sibling . She tried for several years to get help for Bea but when Dara-Lynn was informed by Bea's paediatrician that Bea was clinically obese and had high blood pressure, Dara-Lynn decided to intervene.
She turned to Dr. Joanna Dolgoff's book- “Red Light, Green Light, Eat Right”. Each family member was given a weekly allotment to comply with/to but Bea's were the most restricted. This lead to questions from Bea why she couldn't eat like her brother and sometimes lead to public displays which left Dara-Lynn, looking like an unnecessarily strict mother.
The backlash though was much worse after the article was published. with all sorts of criticism- selfish, hateful, even calling her a f**ked up woman. She recently released the book version of the article -The Heavy. She fears the backlash will be much worse.
I cant say my 1st reaction wasn't to call her a bad mother. I have since reading the 1st write up, gone through several articles and have heard her side of the story. I understand her frustration and where as I might not agree with the way she went about the diet,I am sure I would feel the need to intervene too.
