Celebrate Your Mother Language!!
International Mother Language Day ( IMLD ) – Feb 21st
IMLD was1st announced by UN's Educational, Scientific and
Cultural Organization (UNESCO) on 17th November 1999. It has been
celebrated annually since 2000. It was instituted to promote linguistic and
cultural diversity and multilingualism. The day also commemorates the day 4
students were killed for protesting in 1952. These students were killed during a protest to officially
use their language Bengali, in Bangladesh.
The Alternate Names for International Mother Language Day is
Shaheed Day, Martyrs Day, Omar Ekushey (meaning The Immortal 21st). It’s a
public holiday only in Bangladesh.
Each year there is a theme for the IMLD. This year’s theme
is – Books for mother tongue education.
Examples of activities include

Teaching about different languages and cultures
in a class setting

Traditional dances

Folklore or stories are shared

Poetry in traditional tongue

Exhibitions with emphasis on cultural diversity
