Celebrate Your Mother Language!!

International Mother Language Day ( IMLD )  – Feb 21st

IMLD was1st announced by UN's Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization  (UNESCO)  on 17th November 1999. It has been celebrated annually since 2000. It was instituted to promote linguistic and cultural diversity and multilingualism. The day also commemorates the day 4 students were killed for protesting in 1952. These  students were killed during a protest to officially use their language Bengali, in Bangladesh.
The Alternate Names for International Mother Language Day is Shaheed Day, Martyrs Day, Omar Ekushey (meaning The Immortal 21st). It’s a public holiday only in Bangladesh.
Each year there is a theme for the IMLD. This year’s theme is – Books for mother tongue education.
 Examples of activities  include
-          Teaching about different languages and cultures in a class setting
-          Traditional dances
-          Folklore or stories are shared
-          Poetry in traditional tongue
-          Exhibitions with emphasis on cultural diversity
p
Please enjoy your IMLD. Remember if you dont celebrate your culture or language, it dies. Its important to keep the next generation in the loop.
Please help me celebrate today on my blog.I am suggesting that everyone who reads about this, should please drop a line, a proverb or short poem in their mother tongue in the comment box. Please with its translation. This should be fun. Thank you for reading this.
